Unleashing the Defragmentation Bomb: Revolutionizing Healthcare with Generative AI

The rapid advancements in generative AI, as exemplified by OpenAI's ChatGPT, have unlocked new possibilities for improving healthcare experiences. Through integrating AI-powered systems and applying systems thinking, we can streamline fragmented healthcare processes and enhance overall patient experiences.

Seamless Integration Across Platforms

Recent developments in AI applications, such as ChatGPT, have showcased the potential to create an AI "CoPilot" that integrates and streamlines various applications involved in a patient journey. By connecting platforms like Microsoft does in its Office 365 suite we can create a cohesive system for better patient management and seamless healthcare experiences.

Kintsugi: Mending the Fragmented Healthcare Landscape

Just as the ancient art of Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery") mends broken pottery with gold, generative AI can be the golden glue that binds the fragmented landscape of healthcare. By using systems engineering and identifying patterns in the multidimensional puzzle, we can truly revolutionize the healthcare sector.

Embracing Accelerated Healthcare Transformation

The Gartner hype curve gives the insight that media attention and expectations for AI are growing rapidly, with no peak yet in sight. While a trough of disillusionment will follow, it is essential to identify the real possibilities and filter out the noise. The key lies in agile working, building a minimum viable product (MVP) as early as possible, and iterating from there to reach the plateau of productivity.

Applying Systems Thinking and Systems Engineering to Healthcare

Incorporating innovation with systems thinking (Si network) and System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) can lead to the development of truly inclusive systems. A systems thinker and certainly an Systems Engineer understands the big picture and observes patterns and trends like keeping Humans in the Loop.

It's crucial to ensure that human decision-making remains at the core of the process. I use the OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) loop as a framework for integrating AI and human input. While AI can automate the observation stage, humans should remain responsible for decision-making, with AI supporting orientation and action steps.

Creating a Seamless Healthcare Experience (HeX)

To provide a seamless healthcare experience (HeX), interactions between touchpoints on the patient journey must be as natural and intuitive as possible. The natural language processing (NLP) and under the hood interconnectivity of applications will make this possible if implementing solutions is organized at the right scale.

Overcoming Fragmentation

The current fragmented landscape as described in this KPMG report Healthcare Horizons, presents challenges in regulatory, digital and operational dimensions. By leveraging AI and systems thinking, we can overcome these obstacles and create an inclusive, efficient healthcare system that benefits all. Please join the effort.
